Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) has been linked to vitamin C deficiency, which can impair immune function in those with cancer. Optimal levels of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) are important for immune function. Higher levels of blood glucose appear to decrease cellular stores of ascorbic acid. Impaired immune function is often the result. Reduce sugar intake, as hyperglycemia is common in cancer patients, and increase foods that are rich in vitamin C and supplement with vitamin C to ensure adequate intake throughout treatment.

Recommendation: 1 gram, twice daily
