Fish and Mercury

While fish are generally quite healthy for us, it is wise to consider your overall exposure to toxins when thinking about purchasing or consuming fish. The reason for this is that oceans, lakes, and streams contain surprisingly high levels of toxins.

Choose small fish and wild fish as a general rule. The large fish have lived long enough to bioaccumulate heavy metals in their tissue. Farmed fish should be avoided as they contain high levels of heavy metals from pollution in their living environment and are fed genetically engineered soybean pellets that are contaminated with agricultural chemicals and colored with red dye #40.

Healthy fish options (the least amount of mercury)

  • Wild Salmon (Alaskan)
  • Sardines
  • Anchovies
  • Herring
  • Oysters
  • Skip Jack Tuna
  • Steelhead Trout
  • Flounder
  • Sole

Fish generally found to have high mercury levels should be avoided

  • Farmed Salmon (Atlantic)
  • Albacore Tuna
  • Blue Fin Tuna
  • Yellow Fin (Ahi) Tuna
  • Large Halibut
  • Swordfish
  • Shark
